Hinterland

( currently on hold for exhibition )

92cm (W) x 122cm (H) x 4cm (D)

Mixed media on stretched canvas

Signed with a certificate of authenticity

This painting was inspired by all of the beautiful shapes and colours you'll find on a visit to any hinterland region up and down the east coast; the sea, sand and surf, rivers and canals, rainforest and pastureland, and of course lots of built up areas.

The abstract nature of the piece means you can hang it whichever way you prefer. For this reason I've hidden my signature within the painting so that it won't be distracting from whichever of the four ways you could choose to hang it.

It's also signed on the back.

You're going to love these gorgeous vibrant pinks and greens on their background of midnight blue with smoky highlights of turquoise.

This is a painting of one of my favourite flowers, the pink magnolia. I've loved them since the moment I first laid eyes on them; It's hard to resist that vibrant pink colour. Many magnolias bloom in late winter before their leaves grow back in the spring, but as I love the beautiful big glossy green leaves just as much as I do their blooms I've made this Magnolia a bit of a social rebel, and painted it with both blooms and leaves, hence the contrary title.

460mm wide x 910mm high x 40mm thick

I have used Derivan Matisse artist acrylic colours on stretched canvas.

The artwork is varnished to satin finish.

Signed on the front, signed and titled on the back

Mother of Ghosts $180

Acrylic Paint on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

25cm x 20cm x 4cm

Signed on both the front and back; then finished with a beautiful gloss varnish.

This work depicts Death personified. She draws her name from the Etruscan/Roman Goddess Mania (Manea). Manea was the Goddess of Death, ruling over the Underworld with her husband Mantus. She was also the Goddess of Spirits and Chaos. She was said to be the mother of ghosts, the undead, and other spirits of the night.

I’ve included a number of symbolic elements :

  • The Calla Lillies are considered to be the flower most often associated with funerals. They’re not a morbid element though as they represent faith, purity and rebirth in Victorian Flower symbology. (known as Floriography).

  • Death Watch Beetles are included because of the old superstition that says that the ticking sound made by the adult beetle is said to portend death.

  • The crossed bones are there representing the returning of our bodies back to the earth.
